A Brief History of Acura
Acura’s beginnings are wrapped in secrecy. In fact, the entire company was born from secret night meetings between dedicated Japanese Honda engineers who exuded entrepreneurial spirit.
And they did.
This group of engineers went on to create a luxury and high-performance marque of Honda in 1986. And, in just under a year they set up dealerships and successfully launched two luxury classics, the Integra and the Legend.
Acura continues to stand out for their balanced blend of upscale sportiness and competitive pricing. Successful car markers only reach this level of recognition when a customer, or third-party, attests to the vehicle’s reliability, performance, and safety. And, each model of Acura comes with a different safety rating every year.
While many of us believe that our driving record and age are the sole influencers when it comes to insurance rate, that’s not exactly true. The make and model of your car, and how safe it is, plays a crucial role in setting insurance rates.

How much does it cost to insure Acura vehicles?
While you may or may not live in Oregon, we found that studies have shown their insurance rates are slightly lower than the national average. Therefore, we have chosen to calculate the price of insurance for each model of vehicle for an Oregon driver.
The calculation used the following criteria:
- Latest model
- 9,001 – 10,000 miles driven yearly
- Basic coverage
- No accidents in the past 5 years
- Driver located in Portland, Oregon
- Excellent credit
Here is how it breaks down, by model:
MDX
The average insurance costs for an MDX is $132.11 a month, or $1585.32 a year.
TSX
The average insurance costs for a TSX is $149.00 a month, or $1,788.00 a year.
RDX
The average insurance costs for an RDX is $134.15 a month, or $1,609.80 a year.
ZDX
The average insurance costs for a ZDX is $157.00 a month, or $1,884.00 a year.
TL
The average insurance costs for a TL is $188.00 a month, or $2,256.00 a year.
How can you save money on car insurance?
There is an algorithm that determines insurance rates, which is why to get the best rate possible, you need to optimize your hunt for your personal information. Like age, location and driving infractions that could increase your rates.
- Where your permanent residence is: Where you are on the map matters. For instance, last year Michigan was considered the most expensive state for auto insurance, and Ohio was the least expensive. Your rate could be impacted if you use your car for a basic commute in the suburbs versus a long commute through rush hour big-city traffic.
- Driving record: Traffic infractions can add points to your driving records, which in some states can impact your insurance rates. If you do have violations, try to take advantage of any court options to erase these offenses from your record, such as traffic schools and community service. A ticket can be cleared from your record in as little as two years, but sometimes can stick as long as five years, which is a long time to pay higher premiums.
- Credit score: Not yet a clear standard for all insurance providers, using credit history to set insurance rates is being considered across the country. Algorithms with predictive analytics are starting to show that people with higher credit scores tend to experience fewer accidents. So, by taking steps to improve your credit score, you could also be saving money on your auto insurance.
- Vehicle Value: While vehicle safety is high on the list of important factors, so is the value of the vehicle. Your insurance has to cover the value of your vehicle, so if the parts for your brand-new Maserati are more than your used Honda Civic, your insurance will cost more.
Who are the safety experts?
There are two excellent sources online that can give you a glimpse into how safe each vehicle is:
- Insurance Institute for Highway Safety: Originally created in 1959 for insurance company interests, the organization is now an independent, nonprofit that uses scientific research and education to reduce deaths, injuries and property damage due to motor vehicle crashes. With an easy to use “ratings” tool, their website offers access to a robust database for evaluating vehicles under two essential safety scales: crashworthiness (how well occupants are protected in a crash) and crash avoidance and mitigation (how well the vehicle can prevent an accident or lessen its severity). Across the board, Vehicles are given one of four grades: Poor, Marginal, Acceptable or Good.
- National Highway Traffic Safety Administration: If your choice is between two or three makes and models, the NHTSA may be the best resource for you. Their mission statement is “Through enforcing vehicle performance standards and partnerships with state and local governments, NHTSA reduces deaths, injuries and economic losses from motor vehicle crashes.” Going one step farther than the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, their interactive “ratings” tool online allows for “vehicle comparison”, which comes in handy when you need to narrow down your options.

Acura Safety By Model
MDX
The MDX is considered a Midsize luxury SUV and has high rankings in safety across all categories of crashworthiness, as well as superior ranking for crash prevention — earning it the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick+ for the past four years.
This SUV also ranks well for child seat accessibility. Though headlights rank as acceptable in safety, there may be some limitations to the vehicle’s low beams on straightaways and on gradual left turns. While this may not be a deal breaker, if you find yourself driving in the dark often you may want to read this detailed explanation of the ranking.
Historically, this vehicle has performed exceptionally well over the years. Earning the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick from 2012-2013.
Important note: There is a recall on the 2018 model of this vehicle. So, if you currently own an Acura MDX, look to see if your VIN is eligible. Use NHTSA’s search tool if you think your vehicle is at risk.
TSX
This midsize 4-door luxury sedan ranks well for safety in the “crashworthiness” categories, though all 2009-2014 models do not score high for protection on the driver’s side when faced with dramatic head-on collisions.
Pre-2008 models have scored poorly for their protection for head restraints and seats, but newer models made over the past decade have received high ratings in both side crash protection and interior safety. There have been no recalls on the most recent 2014 model of TSX but if you own a 2011 model look to see if your VIN is eligible on the NHTSA site.
RDX
Another Insurance Institute for Highway Top Safety Pick, this 2018 midsize SUV ranks high in all categories for “crashworthiness” and has a Superior rating in crash prevention. Paired with acceptable safety rating for both child seat accessibility and headlights.
Dating back to 2013 models, this car has a high and reliable safety rating across the board. Earning the Top Safety Pick+ for both 2017 and 2016 models. No recalls have been flagged for the 2018 model, though there have been for the 2011 makes. Look to see if your VIN is eligible on the NHTSA site.
ZDX
The latest model of the ZDX is a 2013 model. This 4-door midsize luxury SUV has had a fairly short lifespan as a car, the first model only dating back to 2010. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has very little information on the full safety rating for this vehicle, with only a few highly rated categories available and a basic level safety ranking in crash prevention. The NHTSA has awarded this model a 5-star safety rating, and older models have still held their value. In fact, a used 2013 ZDX can be sold for nearly $25,000, proving the quality and reliability of ZDX is top-notch.
Still, some features of the ZDX have made a recall list, so look to see if your VIN is eligible on the NHTSA site.
TL
Considered a midsize luxury sedan, the latest make, a 2014 TL model has high safety rankings during a crash with either front, side, or rollover impacts—receiving the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick. Though, according to NHTSA, the TL 2014 and models preceding it only receive a 4-star safety rating and also have recalls on the 2014 make. This model has been listed for recall, best to check with the NHTSA site to see if your VIN is eligible.
