A Concise Overview

  • Noblr sells low-mileage insurance for its parent company USAA
  • The Noblr app monitors your driving habits and changes your insurance price based on how you behave behind the wheel
  • While Noblr is too new to have A.M. Best ratings, the Better Business Bureau gives it an A-

Car insurance companies have done the same thing for decades — customers contact a representative and sign up for the amount of coverage they want for their car. The advent of the internet made signing up online a faster choice, but the premise remains the same.

Noblr is an insurance company that believes the old way of doing things isn’t necessarily the best. This company is relatively new compared to other companies and uses its app extensively to determine insurance prices.

Most companies use telematics and other usage-based insurance programs to determine rates, but they don’t focus on the practice. Noblr envisions a different future for drivers. Rather than paying a flat rate, Noblr users only pay for what they use.

While a change in the status quo can be a good thing, it doesn’t always work. Read on to learn more about Noblr car insurance and if it might be the right choice. Then, compare rates with other companies to find the best price and plan for you.

What is Noblr auto insurance?

Noblr car insurance started in 2018 and currently serves eight states: New Mexico, Louisiana, Arizona, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas, and Colorado. It has plans to expand into more states and currently has applications in seven.

Noblr isn’t a standalone company, despite its advertising. Instead, Noblr is partnered with USAA to offer affordable data-driven coverage. To be eligible for Noblr, you must qualify for USAA membership. That means you need to be active or retired military or a family member.

USAA suggests Noblr for three types of drivers, all of whom spend less time behind the wheel than the average American. These drivers include the following:

  • Deployed military service members who own a car but won’t be driving
  • People who own a car but take public transportation or a bicycle to work
  • Remote workers who only use their vehicle for personal errands

USAA, in its partnership with Noblr, offers savings for low-mileage drivers who consistently display safe habits. For drivers who spend more time in their cars, USAA has other options that would probably work better.

Noblr works through its app by keeping track of your driving habits. It records how much you drive, when you use your phone, the routes you take, what time you drive, and your overall smoothness behind the wheel.

With that information, it generates a price for your insurance. Drivers who spend less time behind the wheel can save a lot when they practice safe habits.

What types of car insurance does Noblr sell?

Each of the states Noblr operates in requires a minimum amount of liability coverage. However, you can benefit from additional insurance to make sure your car is covered for any situation the road throws at it.

Noblr separates its insurance types into three categories: insurance for humans, cars, and money.

Insurance for humans includes the following:

  • Medical payments. Your insurance will help pay your medical bills after an accident, no matter who is at fault.
  • Personal injury protection. Like medical payments, personal injury protection can help pay for medical bills, lost wages, and physical therapy.
  • Uninsured bodily injury protection. This coverage will pay your bills if you’re in an accident with a driver who doesn’t have insurance.

For car insurance, you have even more options:

  • Collision. Basic liability insurance covers damage you cause to other vehicles. You need collision insurance to protect your car, no matter who is at fault for an accident.
  • Comprehensive. You need comprehensive coverage for damage outside of accidents — like fire, weather, vandalism, and theft.
  • Uninsured property protection. While state laws require drivers to have insurance, not all drivers obey the law. This insurance will help repair your car after a collision with an uninsured motorist.
  • Rental car. If your vehicle is stuck in a mechanic’s shop after a qualified incident, Noblr will cover your rental car.
  • Roadside assistance. When you find yourself stuck on the side of the road, having someone to help can be a lifesaver. Noblr will come to the rescue if you need a battery jump, tire change, or any other qualifying emergency.

Finally, Noblr offers the following insurance for money:

  • Bodily injury coverage. As half of liability coverage, bodily injury helps pay for medical bills and the legal fees involved if you injure someone else.
  • Property damage coverage. The other half of liability insurance helps pay for repairs if you cause damage to other people’s property.

Noblr doesn’t list other add-ons available for purchase, so it might have more available. Even if these options are all you can buy through Noblr, they cover just about any situation you might run into.

Remember that Noblr is best for drivers who don’t drive very much. If you spend a lot of time behind the wheel, drive late at night, or tend to engage in aggressive driving, Noblr rates will be much higher.

Does Noblr offer discounts?

Noblr’s discounted prices for low-mileage drivers are already considered good savings, but the company does have a few other ways to save. The list isn’t as long as other companies — including parent company USAA — but they offer good ways to save.

Noblr is a little vague about its discounts, but the few it lists include these options:

  • New customer today. If you sign up for a policy at the same time you receive a quote, you’ll be eligible for a discount.
  • Paid in full. You’ll save a small percentage if you pay the fixed portion of your insurance all at once.
  • Renewal. Renewing your policy at the end of six months will earn you a small discount.
  • Referral. If you decide that you love Noblr and want to spread the news to your friends and family, Noblr will reward you with a $25 Amazon gift card per new customer.

When you sign up for a new policy, the app will look for discounts you may be eligible for. If you think you should have more or want to check for additional savings, you can call Noblr, and an insurance representative will help.

Noblr Insurance Reviews

Noblr wants to modernize car insurance, and its app does a good job of getting there. It also promises to keep your insurance rates as cheap as possible, with a fixed rate during your first six months that won’t change no matter how much you drive.

However, a website can only tell you so much. One of the best ways to determine if a company is right for you is to look at its reviews.

Unfortunately, Noblr is too small to have ratings from A.M. Best, though USAA receives a superior A++ for its financial strength.

In the past, Noblr had a B+ rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB). However, Noblr has since worked to improve its claims resolutions and improved its score to an A-.

There are numerous complaints about Noblr on the BBB website, most of which involve the claims process. Many customers report that their claims were not resolved in a timely manner. In some cases, customers felt like management was avoiding them.

Other complaints are perhaps the result of misunderstandings in Noblr’s process. Noblr rewards drivers for engaging in safe driving habits, especially for avoiding cell phone use and driving late at night. Many of Noblr’s complaints are from customers angry that their rates went up after engaging in such behavior.

However, it’s not all bad news. Many customers are ecstatic with the company’s affordability, stating that Noblr was their cheapest option by a substantial margin. While there are many complaints about the claims process, not all customers are unhappy. Many praise Noblr for handling their claims in record time.

Find the Best Auto Insurance for Your Needs

Noblr has a specific customer in mind for its products: you should be a safe driver who puts few miles on your vehicle and qualifies for USAA insurance. If that’s you, Noblr could save you a lot of money on car insurance.

If Noblr sounds like it might be right for you, your next step is to get a personalized quote. Afterward, compare quotes from other companies to ensure you get the best price and product.
