The Bottom Line

State Farm car insurance is an excellent choice for many drivers, especially for those with a not-so-perfect driving record who need high-risk auto insurance. Younger drivers will also likely find the cheapest rates with State Farm.

State Farm is the largest auto insurer in the industry, with over 100 years of experience. So you can rest assured knowing that you’ll have access to a multitude of coverage options and discounts with a well-established company.

However, drivers with a poor credit history might find cheaper rates elsewhere. It is also worth noting that State Farm does not offer GAP insurance.

While State Farm might make an excellent choice for you, every driver is unique, and we recommend that you shop around with multiple insurance companies before making your decision.

State Farm is celebrating over 100 years in business and is currently the largest auto insurance company in the United States, with nearly 17% of the total market share. George Jacob “G.J.” Mecherle, a retired farmer and insurance salesman, founded State Farm in 1922 as a single-line auto insurance company.

The company now offers over 100 different products and services across five industries. It boasts below-average rates and excellent customer service, positioning itself as one of the top insurance picks for most drivers. Even drivers with marks on their driving history can find cheap car insurance through State Farm.

State Farm has multiple policy discounts and a large network of agents available day and night. However, if you have a poor credit history or need GAP insurance, you might want to look elsewhere.

Keep reading to learn more about State Farm car insurance and find out if it’s the right fit for you.

State Farm Insurance Rates

How much is State Farm car insurance?

State Farm is one of the cheapest car insurance companies in the industry, with an average annual rate of $1,267 — $275 lower than the national average.

To see how insurance rates vary across the country, take a look at the map below.

View as image

However, keep in mind that several factors come into play when deciding your car insurance rates. Everything from the types of car insurance you chooses to your age to your driving history will play a role in how insurance companies set your rates.

We go into more detail in the sections below about how much you can expect to pay for insurance, depending on your unique situation.

How much is minimum coverage with State Farm?

The minimum auto insurance required by state varies, but almost all states require drivers to carry a minimum liability coverage, and some require personal injury protection, medical payments, and/or uninsured motorist insurance.

Liability auto insurance does not cover your vehicle, but it pays for other drivers’ damages in an accident you cause.

Currently, State Farm has the third-lowest minimum coverage rates, falling behind only GEICO auto insurance and USAA auto insurance. Take a look at the table below to compare State Farm and other liability rates with those of other top insurance competitors.

State Farm’s minimum liability insurance is $1,191 per year on average, with the national average being $1,463. That’s an annual savings of over $260.

How much is full coverage with State Farm?

Full coverage insurance will typically cost you more, but it also covers more. Full coverage auto insurance includes not only liability coverage but also collision and comprehensive.

State Farm has the fourth-lowest average rates for drivers with full coverage at $1,348 annually. The table below shows how State Farm stacks up against other top insurance companies.

State Farm’s rates are nearly 17% lower than the national average of $1,621.

How much is State Farm insurance for teen drivers?

One of the most significant factors that influence rates is age, and adding a teenager to your policy can cause your premium to skyrocket. However, State Farm is a great choice for auto insurance for teenage drivers and has some of the best rates for parents adding a teen to their policy.

State Farm has the lowest rate increase among its top competitors for teen drivers, but the rates will always be highest for these young, inexperienced drivers.

This table shows how State Farm beats out the competition when it comes to teenage drivers.

The average rate for guardians adding a teen driver to their State Farm policy is $1,003 per year. This is substantially lower than even GEICO’s $1,958 — a nearly $1,000 difference.

How much is State Farm insurance for young adults?

State Farm has relatively low rates on auto insurance for young adults between the ages of 18 to 25.

On average, drivers will see their rates gradually decrease until reaching 25 years old, and then rates start to level off. This is because younger drivers tend to have more accidents even after exiting their teenage years.

State Farm’s rates for young adults are still below the national average at $2,407 per year. Below are the rates for young adult drivers with State Farm compared to rates from other insurers.

On average, GEICO is another affordable option at $1,783 per year for young adult drivers.

How much is State Farm insurance for senior drivers?

Most drivers will see their rates stay relatively consistent through their 30s, 40s, and 50s. When drivers reach age 65, they may notice their rates going back up.

State Farm offers relatively good rates for auto insurance for older adults at an annual average of $1,423. Below we compare this with top competitors in the industry.

Again, GEICO also provides some of the lowest rates for senior drivers at $1,197 per year.

Both State Farm and GEICO offer some of the most affordable car insurance rates to drivers of all ages.

How does your driving history affect your State Farm rates?

Your driving history is an essential factor in determining your auto insurance rates. Drivers should always expect their rates to increase after an accident or traffic ticket.

Good news: these drivers with a not-so-perfect driving record might find some of the cheapest insurance quotes with State Farm. State Farm offers the second-cheapest insurance rates for drivers who have a speeding ticket on their record at $1,607 annually.

This table shows how State Farm ranks with its competitors in regards to single traffic ticket rates.

Even though State Farm ranks top in many national averages for risky drivers, remember to always compare quotes from multiple insurers. Just because an insurer ranks first on a national level does not mean it’s the best choice in your state or for your unique needs.

How does your credit history affect your State Farm rates?

In contrast to State Farm’s cheap rates for drivers with less-than-stellar driving history, its rates for drivers with poor credit are the highest among the top insurance companies.

Insurers take credit scores into consideration when determining rates because there is a statistical link between good credit and good drivers. Drivers with good credit are less likely to file claims, according to most insurers.

State Farm has the highest rates on our list for auto insurance for drivers with bad credit histories.

Average Monthly Auto Insurance Rates by Credit Rating

Also, not all states allow insurance companies to use credit history when determining rates. California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, and Michigan have passed laws banning this practice.

With so many factors affecting how each insurance company creates its own rates, getting at least three insurance quotes from different companies is always recommended to find the best fit for your needs. That way you can compare State Farm auto quotes against others to ensure you’re getting the best price.

What discounts are offered by State Farm?

State Farm offers an abundance of car insurance discounts to its policyholders. These discounts can help drivers lower their car insurance rates significantly since you are able to bundle several discounts on top of one another.

Some of the most common discounts available are the good driver discount, vehicle safety discount, and multi-policy discount.

Let’s take a look at the discounts offered by State Farm:

  • Accident-free or safe driver insurance discounts. If you drive without an accident for three years, you can qualify for an accident-free discount from State Farm.
  • Good student discount. If a student is age 16 to 25, is going full-time to high school or college, and has a 3.0 grade point average, they can save up to 25% with State Farm.
  • Loyal customer discount. Insure more than one vehicle with State Farm; you could save as much as 20%.
  • Multi-policy discount. Insure a home or condo or sign up for life insurance or renters insurance alongside your auto insurance policy, and you can save up to 17% for bundling insurance policies.
  • Defensive driving course discount. Take a defensive driving class, and you may be eligible for a 10% to 15% discount with State Farm.
  • Driver training discount. If drivers under age 21 complete driver training, they can get a discount.
  • Student away at school discount. If one of the drivers of your vehicle is a student under age 25 who moves away to go to school, you may be eligible for a discount.
  • Anti-theft discount. You may qualify for a discount if your car has an alarm or another anti-theft device.
  • State Farm Drive Safe and Save. State Farm’s usage-based program offers drivers who participate a 30% discount on their policy. This program can operate through an app on your phone or through OnStar.

Remember that not all these discounts are available in every state. Make sure to contact a State Farm agent to clarify which discounts are available in your area and which may apply to you.

What is State Farm’s Steer Clear Program?

Another opportunity for young drivers to save with State Farm is by taking advantage of the company’s Steer Clear app.

Drivers under 25 years of age with no at-fault accidents for the past three years are eligible to participate in the State Farm Steer Clear program. This app provides five training modules that consist of driving scenarios, lessons, and quizzes for the driver to complete within six months.

After completing this program, young drivers may be eligible for additional discounts — which is crucial since rates are highest for young, inexperienced drivers.

Instead of helping me to figure out a way to reduce costs, [REDACTED NAME], a representative in their Property department kept reading their standard clauses in front of her to me like a 10 year old student reciting a textbook. When asking to talk to her manager, she rejected my request right away. Instead, she called back later and said she did talk to the manager and rejected the claim of covering my transmission and happily send a rejection letter to me. It sounds like she wi take some credits for rejecting a legitimate claim on her resume.

Shocked at service

Just shocked! Been with the company for 12+ years, hit something in my yard, filed a claim, and have yet to hear from a claim agent. I had to reach out myself and did the estimate picture assessment, which was supposed to be 24 to 48 hours, but haven't heard from anyone. Been four days, lack of concern for the customer, I guess that don't have the proper staff, not sure, guessing here. Nothing like what they used to be.

I recently rented a vehicle for a family trip and had a minor not-at-fault accident. My agent flat refused to take the claim, first alleging that I HAD TO file with the other insurance company. I declined, and she then told me I had to report the claim online. I tried to do that, but was told I couldn't because it was a rental car. I had to call a 800 number. I did so and was told the process takes 20 minutes and the hold time was 25 minutes. I called my agent back and she again refused to help. Needless to say, I have moved to a different carrier as of a few days ago. I am in the same line of work as State Farm, and have been for 25 years. I am deeply familiar with the auto insurance world and the claims process. This level of service is utterly unacceptable and I would NEVER allow such things to occur with my employer. State Farm, you spend an untold fortune advertising your service on all forms of media. However, your actions don't back up your claims (pun intended). I have also interviewed literally dozens of your staff over the years, if not hundreds, and all say the same thing. A poor place to work. You have a lot of work to do, State Farm.

Back in Jan 2020 (CLMS - 2004G091k) someone from State Farm hit me from behind while driving to work. From the start they claims guy attempted not to fully repair my vehicle claiming all damages were not from the accident. He reviewed the accident site on Google Maps. My car had never been hit or damaged until that day. Fast forward to COVID shut down March 15, 2020 and then being diagnosed with cancer which caused me to stop treatment for neck and back pain from the accident and stay safe at home. I later found a doctor who would treated me for the pain in August 2020. I received his bill which he attempted to turn into the claims department with no success. I then receive the bills which I forwarded to State Farm and I'm told they will not honor them because of the 2 year limitation. The USA was shut down, billing was late, people didn't go to work and so forth. All I asked was to pay a $2,400.00 bill which they didn't pay any of my other bills sent to them. Oh, nor did they pay for the yellow paint and side fender damage on my vehicle either. This is how State Farm treats people their clients hit. I know next time to hire a good lawyer no matter what when hit by a State Farm insured driver.

Somebody stole my catalytic converter

Somebody stole my catalytic converter out of my Prius. Somebody stole my catalytic converter out of my Prius. I was impressed by State Farm when I initially called them because they quickly reserved a tow truck to come out the same day and take it to storage for the weekend. State farm also told me I could choose any repair shop, so I chose Toyota where I get all my repairs done. Toyota provided an estimate on their next business day. State farm approved the estimate and issued the payment right after. I told Toyota to order the parts and get started. A week after filing the claim, state farm calls me and tells me they accidently overpayed me and they wanted most of it back. Feeling skeptical, I held onto it until repairs were finished. Toyota still was billing me for the full amount once it was fixed. After being transfered to multiple areas of State Farm, I finally figured out what the problem was. State farm initially approved OEM parts, and then realized later that they only want to cover after market parts. Those non-factory parts can not be ordered by the repair shop that statefarm told me I could go to. When I asked if they would order the parts, they said that they don't supply parts. While all of this is happening, Toyota has been out of the loop and fixed my car with OEM parts because it's all they had! I am a delivery driver and have been without a car for two weeks now. My car is fixed and waiting to be picked up, so I paid for the repair because I'm losing more money every day I don't work. Now State farm is requesting that I return most of the payment because they don't want to pay for the only parts I have access to. Why should I have to pay for State Farm's error? The estimate was already approved and payment was issued when repairs were started on the vehicle. They don't have any right to ask for that money back when they accidently approved the wrong thing. And we are talking about a $2100 difference. Very small amount for a company like statefarm compared to more than 1 month's income for me as a delivery driver. Speaking with a lawyer and the press to get the word out that this is not a company that honor's their initial agreement with you and they are not a company to trust.
