Is Metromile a Good Choice?

As a pay-per-mile auto insurance company, Metromile will keep track of a driver’s mileage by using the Metromile Pulse. The device uses telematics to send driving data to Metromile, which is then used to determine what you pay.

The Pulse does come with GPS, but this can be disabled if you don’t want your location tracked in addition to how far you drive.

How does Metromile track miles?

Metromile sends drivers a telematics device called Metromile Pulse to track miles and charge pay-per-mile car insurance rates. It’s a wireless device that plugs into a vehicle’s diagnostic port, then uses telematics to track mileage. 

Your Metromile auto insurance rates will vary depending on the driving behavior in certain states. If you live in Arizona, Illinois, Oregon, and Virginia, your rates are calculated using the following: 

  • The average speed of the vehicle 
  • The time of day the vehicle is driven
  • The days of the week the vehicle is driven

Some benefits come with installing Pulse since it can help you in certain situations. For example, the Pulse can help locate your vehicle if it’s been stolen or you’ve forgotten where you parked. It can also monitor and keep track of your driving routes and provide information on your car’s fuel economy and other issues that might spring up. 

Metromile Rates

Metromile, a pay-per-mile company, allows drivers to pay depending on how much they drive. Rates will vary just as much as mileage in this case. Drivers on the road for a longer period are more likely to get into an accident and are seen as a larger liability to most car insurance companies.

This means that if you drive less, you can take advantage of cheaper rates. Other factors are taken into consideration, such as age, driving history, where you live, the coverage you want, and even the type of vehicle you drive.

How much does Metromile charge per mile?

Metromile charges a flat rate in addition to the per-mile charge. So, if you drive 450 miles in one month and pay a flat rate of $29 each month, plus six cents for each mile you drive, your bill for that month would end up being $56.

How much will you pay for Metromile’s minimum coverage vs. full coverage?

Always check to see what you need in terms of coverage because this will vary depending on where you live. Doing so before only purchasing the minimum amount of coverage from Metromile will save you any legal trouble down the road.

When it comes to minimum coverage, Metromile still averages higher than most companies, at nearly 22% more. This is the equivalent of double what a driver would pay with USAA and almost $700 more than GEICO’s minimum coverage. Full coverage will be the most expensive option, but it will net you the most coverage possible.

Always check the minimum insurance requirements because coverage varies by state. For example, if you live in a no-fault state like New Jersey or Pennsylvania, you more than likely have larger out-of-pocket expenses in the event of an accident when you take the cheapest option.

Therefore, these states may require certain collision levels to compensate for this fact, which will raise your Metromile minimum coverage rates.

With full coverage, Metromile will be over 25% higher than the national average, which is twice as much as a driver's pay with USAA. GEICO also has cheaper rates for full coverage, around $800 less than a Metromile full coverage policy.

However, AAA and Allstate have more expensive full coverage options, depending on which companies you compare.

Metromile Auto Insurance Rates by Age

As with most car insurance companies, your age will be a significant factor in how much you pay for coverage. A teen driver is going to see higher rates than most other drivers because they’re new to the road and will have less driving experience, making them more of a liability in the eyes of a car insurance company.

Metromile, against the national average, has the second highest rate for teenage drivers. Premiums are shown to be 35% higher for female teenage drivers than the national average, with almost 27% higher rates for male teenage drivers.

Metromile, when compared to USAA, has almost double the rates for teens.

Auto Insurance Rates for Teen Drivers

The numbers will decrease as you get older since a more mature driver is going to understand the rules of the road and be seen as less of a hazard.

For young adult drivers, Metromile is more expensive than the national average.

Female young adult drivers have 6% higher rates, while young male adults have a 5% higher average. While these numbers typically decrease with age, adults have still been shown to have a higher rate with Metromile than the national average as well.

Car insurance discounts help customers lower what they pay on their car insurance policy. Often these discounts depend on factors such as where you live, what type of vehicle you drive, and what other insurance coverage you may need. 

Below are some of the discounts you may be eligible for: 

  • Anti-theft. Having alarms on your vehicle or methods of vehicle recovery makes your car is going less likely to be targeted by a potential thief.

Policyholders can also waive your comprehensive deductible if anything happens to your windshield or window. However, the glass has to be able to be repaired rather than replaced.

Not enough humans work here

Insurance handled by app. If you need a human that is where the trouble begins. Not enough of them at this company. They do not answer the phone on the weekends. Example Road Assistance able to handled by app- you will be fine. Accident on the weekend that does not fit their tick boxes on the app - that is where the trouble begins. Terrible customer service and response rate

This is hands down the worst company i have ever had to deal with. I have been a customer for quite a while, but recently had to file a claim after hitting a pothole. I am now 3 weeks into a claim, while my car sits at the shop undriveable due to bent rims and damages tires, and the person that owns my claim has not returned a single call or email or voicemail in 3 weeks! When I call the main number, they tell me something different each time or ...
This is hands down the worst company i have ever had to deal with. I have been a customer for quite a while, but recently had to file a claim after hitting a pothole. I am now 3 weeks into a claim, while my car sits at the shop undriveable due to bent rims and damages tires, and the person that owns my claim has not returned a single call or email or voicemail in 3 weeks! When I call the main number, they tell me something different each time or blame the partner company they use to process estimates (Snapsheet). When I call Snapsheet they are actually very helpful and clear on what the issue is (spoiler alert, its Metromile). I have spent countless hours on hold or getting bounced around at Metromile, while my car sits idol at the shop simply waiting for approval to replace a few wheels and tires. One of the people I spoke with at Metromile actually told me "Well, everyone is working from home now, so its very hard to get ahold of them".

I've worked from home for several years and don't drive a ton, so the pricing made sense. I switched a couple years ago and it's been uneventful (but great!). Last month there was a freak accident where my car roof and sunroof was damaged while sitting in my driveway. I was so anxious that the "cheap" insurance I had would be a pain to deal with. I couldn't have been more wrong. Metromile made the whole process SO EASY and totally painless. I had a quick phone call with the claims agent who handled everything and worked directly with the auto body repair shop of my choice. The shop also said Metromile was easy to work with. My rental car reimbursement is only $30/day so I asked if they'd reimburse me for using Lyft instead (cheaper for all parties!) and they did. I submitted my Lyft receipts and got a check in the mail within a week. I'll be a Metromile customer for life.

Metromile is the cheapest auto insurance. You put a tracker in your car and you pay by the mile. I don't drive a whole lot so I don't have to pay that much. Very poor claims experience. It was a straightforward claim for windshield replacement because of a rock chip. Before submitting the claim I was told that deductible was $500 and that I could go ahead and get it replaced and would be reimbursed the rest. I understand that Metromile prefers and trusts safelite but I DO NOT. I trust my dealer with the quality of new glass, so went to Seattle Mini Dealership to get it replaced. After I paid almost $...

Nowhere in the policy it says that if you don’t get it replaced from safelite, you won’t get the money! This is ridiculous, very poor customer experience. I have been a customer for almost 3 years with a clean record and this is what I get in return when I file a claim for the very first time? They might have done something similar during any accident I might have gotten into. Either update the policy document that you give to the customer regarding safelite or don’t deny the claim. This is a clear fraud.

Not great if you have a claim

The catalytic converter was stolen from my Prius. It took 24 hours for them to come tow my car to one of their locations where evaluators can assess the loss. I've been without my car for seven days. They have not been able to tell me when I'll get my car back just so I can take it in to the shop, let alone what the assessment is. Argh!

Shocking Savings

I am amazed how much money I'm saving with Metromile. I was insured with another company (think Flo) for 7 years. My car is 18 years old and insurance was ~50.00/mo. for liability only. I finally decided to get a new (used) car and got a quote from Metromile just out of curiosity. I thought something was wrong with their website when I was quoted ~45.00/mo. as a base rate for BOTH CARS. I drive anywhere from 100-200 miles per month (way less...
I am amazed how much money I'm saving with Metromile. I was insured with another company (think Flo) for 7 years. My car is 18 years old and insurance was ~50.00/mo. for liability only. I finally decided to get a new (used) car and got a quote from Metromile just out of curiosity. I thought something was wrong with their website when I was quoted ~45.00/mo. as a base rate for BOTH CARS. I drive anywhere from 100-200 miles per month (way less now because of the quarantine). Three months in, my total bill has been under $55.00 each month. Oh-- and the new car has full coverage including uninsured/underinsured BI, a $250 deductible for comprehensive and collision, $0 for glass, rental reimbursement, and roadside assistance. Old car has the same liability and roadside assistance. Other insurers have quoted me anywhere from $145-195/mo. for identical coverage. I feel like I won the insurance lottery or something. (I should say I have a spotless driving record with not even a parking ticket and credit scores in the upper 700's.) If you don't drive much, it's worth checking out. But of course, YMMV-- in this case quite literally.

Metro Mile, like with all US auto insurers the coverage stops at the Mexico border & supplemental Mexico auto insurance is required when driving in that country. The problem is that Metro Mile charges for miles driven in Mexico although the vehicle HAS NO INSURANCE ON IT. If you unplug the device so they can't charge for these in Mexico miles they will charge you (I think it's $250 a day). So your choice is to pay for auto insurance that you are not receiving or pay a fine. They humorously think this is OK & have told me that this is the way it is, it's in the contract (somewhere). Sorry I have a philosophical problem with doing business with companies that do not have any values. So after about 1-1/2 years of business I will dump them, even if it costs a bit more. Just so I don't promote any business with scumbags.
