Progressive Insurance
Average Monthly Rate For Good Drivers
$109A.M. Best Rating:
A+ (Superior)Complaint Level:
LowPros
- Strong financial ratings
- Top three most popular insurance companies
- Coverage available nationally
- Competitive DUI rates for high-risk drivers
- Affordable rideshare insurance
- Accident forgiveness
Cons
- Poor claims handling
- Below average satisfaction
- High number of customer complaints
- Expensive rates for young drivers
You should consider buying insurance from Progressive if you need rideshare auto insurance coverage. The Progressive rideshare add-on offers more coverage than some other plans and is reasonably priced into the Progressive insurance payment on your personal policy.
Progressive Snapshot is also a competitive option for good drivers who work from home or otherwise have very short commutes. Just be careful — Progressive will raise your usage-based insurance rates if you drive at night or brake too often.
Average insurance rates are much higher with Progressive than with other companies. So if you’re looking for a liability-only or full coverage policy, you’ll likely find much better rates with local insurers in your area.
However, Progressive offers affordable auto insurance for drivers with a DUI. High-risk drivers should compare Progressive insurance quotes against other companies before buying to see if it offers the best rates in your state. Start comparing car insurance quotes for free by entering your ZIP code below.
What You Should Know About Progressive Insurance
Most credit rating companies give Progressive positive reviews and strong ratings for its financial strength. Unfortunately, Progressive auto insurance customer service leaves much to be desired.
Progressive car insurance is not good if you prefer speaking with an agent. The company operates predominantly online and receives very low satisfaction ratings when it comes to customer service, claims, and representative availability.
Progressive Financial Ratings
Financial strength is where Progressive shines. With an A+ rating from A.M. Best and a $75.25 billion market cap, the company is well-equipped to pay out on any claims you might file.
Moody’s also gives the insurer a stable Aa2 rating for financial strength regarding its continued ability to handle severe auto accidents.
Progressive Customer Service
Progressive is rated poorly by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) for its high number of customer complaints and phenomenally poor claims department.
It received an “F” rating from the BBB, with most complaints directed at the claims department for long waits and low payouts. The company also scored below average for customer satisfaction in every region with J.D. Power.
Progressive Claims Handling
According to Progressive customers, you may have a long inspection process ahead of you if you recently filed a claim. One driver waited over six months for a replacement part after a minor accident, and many other policyholders reported similar experiences.
Progressive resolves most of these complaints with the BBB. However, with such poor customer loyalty ratings, these drivers likely found another company to shop with.
To file a Progressive insurance claim, use the mobile app or visit the company’s website. You will need your Progressive auto insurance login to file a claim online.
You can also call the Progressive insurance number toll-free at 1-800-776-4737 to file with an agent.

Progressive Insurance Coverage Options
Progressive car insurance rates may not be the cheapest, but the company offers a competitive suite of coverage options. These are the standard car insurance options from Progressive for liability and full coverage:
- Liability-only. Liability insurance is required in most states and pays for property damage and bodily injury to others if you cause an accident.
- Collison. Collision covers repairs to your vehicle after an auto accident.
- Comprehensive. Comprehensive covers accidents outside of collisions, including weather-related damages, theft, and vandalism.
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM). UM/IM protects you from paying for damages caused by another driver with no insurance, insufficient insurance, or a hit-and-run driver.
- Medical payments (MedPay). MedPay covers your medical bills after an accident.
- Personal injury protection (PIP). No-fault states require PIP to cover your medical bills and lost wages after an accident or collision.
- GAP insurance. GAP covers the remaining balance on an auto loan if the vehicle is totaled in an accident.
Progressive also offers classic car insurance, motorcycle insurance, and coverage for golf carts, ATVs, RVs, snowmobiles, and segways. You can bundle these policies for discounts on your auto insurance. For more information on bundling options, see can auto and motorcycle insurance be bundled?
If you need other kinds of auto coverage, Progressive delivers with rideshare add-ons, commercial insurance, and Snapshot, its usage-based insurance program (UBI).
Progressive Usage-Based Insurance
Progressive Snapshot can be a very affordable option compared to other UBI policies. The app tracks your driving habits to see if you qualify for discount auto insurance. Drivers who are on the road during the day and travel less than 1,000 miles per month will get the best rates.
The Snapshot mobile app monitors your driving in two ways:
- Mileage. The app tracks how far you drive in a month.
- Habits. The app also tracks how fast you drive, how often you brake, and how often you drive at night.
Unfortunately, this means Progressive could charge you higher rates if you have a long commute or work late hours. That’s why drivers can try Snapshot before they buy, even if they aren’t existing policyholders. For more information, see Progressive Snapshot review.
On average, drivers save around $12 per month with Snapshot. Try it risk-free for 30 days to see if you can save money with usage-based car insurance. Progressive will track your driving and then apply any discount to your quotes. For more information, see buying usage-based auto insurance.
Progressive Rideshare Insurance
Consider Progressive rideshare auto insurance coverage if you’re a delivery or rideshare driver with Uber or Lyft. The company allows drivers to add coverage to their existing personal policy, which is much cheaper than buying separate commercial or business-use coverage.
With the rideshare add-on, all coverages from your personal policy carry over while you are waiting for a rider. In addition, roadside assistance and rental car reimbursement will continue to apply while you have a rider if you already carry this coverage.
Other insurance companies do not offer the same amount of rideshare coverage as an add-on, so Progressive is a competitive option if you regularly use your vehicle for deliveries.
Progressive Commercial Auto Insurance
If you regularly use your vehicle for work beyond deliveries or rideshare, you will need to buy commercial auto insurance coverage. As the largest commercial auto insurer in the country, Progressive is a popular choice for many different types of businesses.
Progressive commercial auto insurance options include the following:
- Tow truck insurance
- Dump truck insurance
- Food truck insurance
- Pickup truck insurance
- Fleet insurance
Commercial auto insurance rates average between $140 and $150 per month. However, commercial vehicles are eligible for Progressive Snapshot, and businesses save an average of 5% off fleet insurance with UBI. (For more information, read our “Buying Fleet Auto Insurance: What You Need To Know“)
Does Progressive offer other types of insurance?
Progressive property insurance extends beyond auto and commercial coverage. You can buy homeowners, renters, condo, or mobile home insurance and bundle your coverage to earn discounts on your auto policy.
Here are other insurance options from Progressive:
- Business
- Contractor
- Dental/Vision
- Electronic device
- Event
- Flood
- General liability
- Health
- Identity theft
- Landscaping
- Life
- Pet
- Travel
- Umbrella
- Worker’s compensation
Other companies might underwrite certain types of insurance offered by Progressive. Read your policy carefully and speak with an agent if you have questions regarding your Progressive insurance coverage.

Compare Progressive Auto Insurance Rates
Progressive uses your age, gender, and driving record to determine your rates. It also considers where you live and the kind of car you drive.
In general, safe drivers who remain accident-free and claim-free have the lowest Progressive auto insurance quotes.
Is Progressive insurance really cheaper? No. Progressive auto insurance rates remain around average for most drivers. You’ll likely find more reasonable rates with another company, so shop around and compare quotes before you decide to buy Progressive.
Start comparing quotes now with our rate charts below. We compare Progressive quotes against the biggest national insurers by age, driving record, and credit score.
Progressive Auto Insurance Rates for Good Drivers
Good drivers pay the lowest rates with Progressive. However, if you’re a teen or young driver under 21, you will pay the most expensive rates for coverage regardless of your record.
Use the tables below to compare Progressive car insurance rates by age for drivers with good records.
Progressive Rates for Young Drivers

Progressive Auto Insurance Rates by Driving Record
DUIs, at-fault accidents, and speeding tickets increase your risk as a driver. Every auto insurance company will raise your rates if you become more of a risk, but each ranks certain offenses differently.
High-risk drivers with speeding tickets or a DUI will get affordable auto insurance quotes from Progressive.
Other companies, including State Farm and American Family, still offer better rates than Progressive after an accident. However, Progressive DUI insurance is cheaper than average and many other companies, even GEICO. For more information on high-risk auto insurance, see buy high-risk auto insurance coverage.

Progressive Insurance Discounts Available
On top of various insurance options and coverages, Progressive auto insurance stands out by offering additional benefits not generally available with other companies. For example, the mobile app easily tracks driving habits and rewards good drivers with discounts.
If you use the Progressive mobile app or take advantage of any benefits and add-ons listed below, you may qualify for additional auto insurance discounts. Scroll down for a list of Progressive discounts and to learn more about how to qualify.
Progressive Auto Insurance Discounts
Progressive auto insurance discounts are based on driving habits, payment methods, and customer loyalty, so you can qualify for numerous discounts even if you have a poor driving record or credit history.
Below is a complete list of Progressive’s car insurance discounts. The discount amount is listed if known.
Progressive Auto Insurance Discount
Progressive Loyalty-Based Discounts Progressive Driver-Based Discounts Progressive Policy-Based Discounts
Multi-Policy (5%) Homeowner Insurance (10%) Automatic Payments
Multi-Car (3%) Safe Driver ($146/yr) Paid-in-Full
Continuous Coverage Teen Driver Paperless Billing
Good Student (10%) Buying Online (9%)
Distant Student Online Quotes (7%)
Progressive offers a few decent discounts, especially for bundling and buying auto insurance online. However, this list is not nearly as extensive as some companies’ lists. Progressive fails to offer the low-mileage, military members, and occupation-based discounts available with most other companies.
Don’t miss out on savings. Compare Progressive’s discounts to other companies’ and see if other benefits or policy add-ons make Progressive worthwhile for your coverage.
Progressive Benefits and Add-Ons
Some Progressive policy add-ons are automatically included at no extra cost, while you can add others for a slight increase to your rates. Drivers also earn additional perks as part of the Loyalty Rewards program, including accident forgiveness.
These are some of the most popular auto insurance benefits offered by Progressive:
- Accident forgiveness. Progressive will not raise your rates after your first auto accident claim. Small accident forgiveness is automatically included in your policy, and drivers earn large accident forgiveness after five years.
- Deductible savings bank. Progressive reduces your deductible by $50 every year you remain claim-free, and drivers can use the savings account toward their deductible if they file a claim.
- Name Your Price tool. This is a free service that allows customers to choose coverage based on the price they want to pay for insurance.
- Pet injury coverage. This coverage is automatically included in your collision policy and covers up to $1,000 in vet bills and rehabilitation without a deductible.
- Rental reimbursement. Progressive pays $40-$60 per day for a rental car while your vehicle is in the shop for up to 30 days.
The Name Your Price tool and pet injury coverage are perks we don’t usually see from insurance companies. Depending on how much car insurance you need, using the Name Your Price tool can get you very low rates. Just don’t drive underinsured, or you could be paying out of pocket for liability costs, medical bills, and more.
Progressive Mobile App Review
Overall, the Progressive mobile app makes managing your auto policy easier. Individual policyholders can do the following:
- Access policy documents, including ID cards
- Make a claim, submit photos, and contact a claims representative
- Pay bills and set up automatic payments
- Contact roadside assistance and authorized service centers
You cannot buy Progressive car insurance through the app, but you can get quotes and contact an agent.
However, Progressive’s mobile app is limited to individual auto policyholders. You will not be able to access any commercial policies or coverage you have on other vehicle types, or manage homeowners or renters insurance.
The insurance mobile app is also separate from Snapshot. If you sign up for UBI, you have to download the separate Progressive Snapshot app. This application tracks your driving habits, and your rates will change based on how well and how far you drive.
We find that most policyholders are pleased with the Progressive mobile app — it has a 4.6/5 rating on Google Play and a 4.5/5 in the App Store. The Snapshot app has similar reviews, with most complaints directed at the brake sensitivity of the devices. For more information on the Snapshot program, see Progressive Snapshot review.
How Progressive Insurance Ranks Among Providers
Progressive is one of the top three largest auto insurers in the United States. Only GEICO and State Farm have a larger market share. This is likely because GEICO and State Farm offer cheaper rates than Progressive, especially for teens and drivers with poor credit.
Progressive vs. GEICO
Is Progressive or GEICO cheaper? The table below compares rates for GEICO vs. Progressive.
Progressive vs. GEICO
Driver Progressive Auto Insurance Rates Geico Auto Insurance Rates
Teen $7,516 $2,839
Adult $1,300 $960
Senior $1,273 $940
W/a Speeding Ticket $1,710 $1,282
W/an Accident $2,284 $1,595
W/a DUI $1,760 $2,566
Poor Credit $2,471 $1,781
GEICO offers lower rates, but Progressive provides competitive rideshare and usage-based insurance options. If you’re looking for more than just a standard liability or full coverage policy, consider comparing Progressive’s quotes online against other local insurers.
Progressive vs. State Farm
Both GEICO and State Farm offer rates three times cheaper for teens. State Farm also offers better rates to drivers with tickets or accidents.
Progressive vs. State Farm
Driver Progressive Auto Insurance Rates State Farm Auto Insurance Rates

Adult $1,300 $1,032

Progressive and State Farm are about average for drivers with poor credit, but you should still compare quotes from these two companies and more to find the most affordable coverage in your neighborhood. For more information, see Progressive vs. State Farm auto insurance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Progressive pay for a rental while my car is in the shop?
Yes. If you carry the rental reimbursement add-on with your policy, Progressive will pay for a rental while your car is in the shop due to a covered loss.
How does Progressive determine fault in an accident?
State laws and the unique circumstances of your accident will influence how Progressive determines fault.
For example, if you live in a no-fault insurance state and use Progressive, Progressive will handle your claims up to the limits of your policy. If you live in a tort state, fault will be determined by state law. There may be shared fault between the drivers, and you will have to file a claim through both your and the other drivers’ insurance companies.
Who pays my deductible if I’m not at fault for an accident?
You must pay your deductible up front before your insurance policy pays for any coverages. However, depending on state laws, you may recover all or some of your deductible from the at-fault driver. Progressive promises to work with customers if you’re able to recover some costs.
How will a claim affect my Progressive rates when my policy renews?
Claims can raise your rates by 20%-40%, and filing a claim will raise your Progressive rates at your next renewal period. Before your policy renews, compare quotes from other companies to see if you can’t find cheaper coverage elsewhere.
What if my repairs cost more than Progressive’s estimate?
Progressive will reinspect your vehicle and write up a new estimate if more damage is found after the initial inspection or during the repair process. You will not be responsible for any additional costs as long as your policy covers the loss or damage.
How do I contact Progressive?
You can access your policy and account information 24/7 with Progressive online through the company’s website or mobile app. To speak with an agent over the phone, call Progressive toll-free at 1-800-776-4737 during business hours.
How do I get Progressive auto insurance quotes?
